Book Review: Business Model Generation

I just picked up this book and have found it to be an incredibly insightful read.

“Business Model Generation is a handbook for visionaries, game changers, and challengers striving to defy outmoded business models and design tomorrow’s enterprises.”

Written by Alexander Osterwalder & Yves Pigneur, the book was co-created by 470 “Business Model Canvas” practitioners from 45 countries, the book features a beautiful, highly visual design that takes powerful strategic ideas and tools, and makes them easy to implement. It explains the most common Business Model patterns, based on concepts from leading business thinkers, and helps you reinterpret them.

After reading the book you will systematically understand and be able to design, and implement “game changing” business models or analyze and reinvent old ones.

Business Model Generation features practical innovation techniques used by some of the worlds leading consultants and companies.

Designed for “doers” the book is for those ready to abandon outmoded thinking and embrace new models of value creation. A great read for executives, consultants and entrepreneurs.

The book introduces 9 key areas of focus when developing a new business/company/product in an incredibly simple way (listed below) that then serve as the foundation for developing business models.

Key Activities
Key Partners
Key Resources

You will learn how to arrange these “building blocks” in a very specific way, referred to as a “business model canvas” then use them to create, evaluate & communicate business models clearly & effectively.

The book is incredibly easy to read, beautifully illustrated and offers a well-organized introduction to business model generation.

The team has also created an iPad app that makes it simple to create and evaluate business model canvases, at a cost of $29.99, it’s a pricy app, but after reading the book, you may be tempted to download it and start using it right away.
